ZINC NINE PSYCHEDELIC is a trio of three visionary musicians that play exciting, vital music, devoted to improvisation based in pure sound and sonic tone color. Their first performance together as this trio achieved legendary status within the New York new music cognoscenti. Kevin's percussion colors, Dave's trumpet and live electronics, and Nick's electric guitar and software create a sonic space that is vibrant, exciting, and transformational.
In less than 10 years KEVIN NORTON has lead and/or co-lead about 20 critically acclaimed recordings, many of them making year-end 'Best of'lists. On one of the recent recordings, 'Time-Space Modulator' integrates intricate, sophisticated composition work with the deep improvisatory skills of Kevin, Tony Malaby, Dave Ballou and John Lindberg. Kevin has also played with many highly esteemed European improvisers such as Paul Rogers, Joëlle Léandre, Paul Dunmall and Frode Gjerstad. Also, for at least ten years, Mr Norton was Anthony Braxton's main percussionist in both the 'ghost trance'phase and the 'standards' phase, plotting out the course for all percussionists who followed him.
NICK DIDKOVSKY brings tabletop guitar and his homebrew software to Z9P. In February 2004 Nick Didkovsky and Kevin Norton recorded 'The Bright Lights, The Big Time'(on FMR) with British bassist Paul Rogers. In 1983, Nick founded the avant-rock septet Doctor Nerve, and currently lives in NYC where he continues to compose for Nerve as well as other ensembles such as Meridian Arts Ensemble, PRISM Quartet, Arte Quartet California EAR Unit, and New Century Players.
DAVE BALLOU adds an array of electronic effects to his trumpet. Recently completing his eighth recording for SteepleChase records, Dave appears on numerous recordings by Kevin Norton, Rabih Abou Khalil, Andrew Hill, Maria Schneider, Don Preston and Cameron Brown. Besides maintaining a busy performing and composing schedule, he serves as Assistant Professor of Music at Towson University where he teaches classes in improvisation, composition and jazz history.
