This concert is a dynamic pairing of one of Baltimore’s iconic jazz figures, saxophonist Carl Grubbs, with one of the fresh large ensembles on today’s jazz scene.
The Boston-based Makanda Project was formed in 2005 to play previously unrecorded compositions by the late multi-instrumentalist Makanda Ken McIntyre. Makanda is a significant jazz composer with a unique voice: his pieces feature strong rhythms and distinctively lyrical melodies, and a depth and imaginativeness marked by how effectively he does the unexpected. He wrote 400 compositions, of which only 100 have been recorded.
Pianist John Kordalewski, a former McIntyre student and sideman, has arranged the Makanda Project’s music for multiple horns. The other members of the group are among Boston’s leading jazz musicians:
saxophonists Kurtis Rivers, Sean Berry, and Charlie Kohlhase;
trumpeters Josiah Woodson and Jerry Sabatini;
trombonist Bill Lowe;
bassist John Lockwood;
and drummer Yoron Israel.
Their first album, “Struttin’,” featuring Oliver Lake, is on Passin’ Thru records.
