NOW Ensemble
Evolution Contemporary Music Series
Season 5: A Sense of Place -- real and abstract musical communities

Each of this season's programs focuses on dynamic, engaging new music from a particular geographical region or broadly defined "scene." From Finnish and English composers to Americans at home and abroad, a question persists: in an increasingly global and virtual culture, does the national or cultural origin of music -- a sense of place -- still matter?

Tickets: $15 general/$10 students

NEW AMSTERDAM

Hailed as "a polished, versatile chamber group...combin[ing] the formal elegance of chamber music with a pop-honed concision" (Steve Smith, Time Out New York), NOW Ensemble is one of many acts featured on New Amsterdam Records, a haven for young New York composers and performers whose music slips through the cracks between genres. NOW performs music by Timothy Andres, Patrick Burke, Mark Dancigers, Stephen Gorbos, Judd Greenstein and Missy Mazzoli. Join us at 7:00pm for a pre-concert conversation with composer and co-founder of both NOW Ensemble and New Amsterdam Records, Judd Greenstein.

The series continues on December 7th with
ACROSS THE POND

Evolution presents music by composers from the United Kingdom: Thomas Adès, Anna Clyne, Jonathan Harvey Tarik O'Regan, and new Peabody Institute faculty member Oscar Bettison. Violinist Courtney Orlando of Alarm Will Sound will give the world premiere of Bettison's "Neolithic Airs" (2008). Join us at 7:00pm for a pre-concert conversation with Bettison and Peabody musicologist Richard Giarusso.
