Carl Grubbs presents his John Coltrane Birthday tribute, a Baltimore tradition, for the first time at this venue!
His special guest is the legendary bassist,and close musical associate of Coltrane, Reggie Workman.
The Philadelphia born Reggie Workman is an internationally acclaimed bassist, composer, arranger, record / concert producer, and educator. He's one of the most original and technically gifted of all bassists. His versatile style fit into both hard bop and avant-garde settings Although best known for his work with John Coltrane, his collaborative projects with other artists are quite impressive, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers,Yusef Lateef, Lee Morgan, Booker Little, Elvin Jones, Alice Coltrane, Freddy Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Terumasa Hino, Mal Waldron, Max Roach, David Murray, Oliver Lake, Chico Freeman, Ernie Watts, Sonny Simmons, and many others.
. Hewas named a Living Legend in 1999 by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and in 1995 by the African-American Historical and Cultural Museum of Philadelphia. He was a recipient of the Mary Flagler Trust award in 2000, and the I.A.J.E award in 1992. Workman has received numerous Meet The Composer grants.
In the mid 1980's, Reggie became an adjunct professor at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. In 1987 he accepted full-time professorship and curriculum coordinator positions at the New School University Jazz and Contemporary Music Program. There he implemented and conducted classes such as Coltrane Ensemble, Futuristic Music, Bass Ensembles, the Art Blakey Ensemble, and many more. Since 1998 he has been involved in an on-going collaboration with the Montclair Academy of Dance and Music Laboratory in Montclair, NJ as well as with Montclair Community Pre-K Center, where he and his wife Maya are developing creative concepts for children of all ages and cultures through movement, music, rhythms and arts.
Reggie has been involved in a number of tours, festivals, and international workshops throughout the world. He has performed and taught workshops and clinics in Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Belgium, Germany, France, Holland, England, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Australia, Japan and many other destinations. He has received numerous grants and awards such as the "Eubie Blake Award" for musical excellence in 1979, a "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the New York-based Jazz Foundation of America in 1997, and the prestigious "Living Legacy Award" presented to him at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts by the Mid Atlantic Foundation in 1999. He has recently been awarded a grant from the Mary Flagler Trust for his upcoming Makeda and Solomon Project, a spiritual opera which is to be produced in concert and fully-staged versions.
