ABOUT THE MUSICIANS:
CECIL McBEE
Double bassist Cecil McBee got his start with the Paul Winter Sextet and earned international acclaim in the mid-'60s touring with Charles Lloyd and Pharoah Sanders. He went on to perform around the world with such artists as Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis, Bobby Hutcherson, Keith Jarrett, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, and Joe Henderson. The recipient of two NEA composition grants, McBee has written works that are performed worldwide and have been recorded by Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Charles Tolliver, and many others. He won a Grammy in 1989 for his performance of Blues for John Coltrane and was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame in 1991. McBee is now working on a book about technique for string bass improvisation
KELLY SHEPHERD:
Kelly Shepherd, at the age of eleven, began his musical studies at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. There he studied theory/harmony and saxophone while gaining his first playing experience in church. Later, while studying classical music at the Baltimore School for the Arts under the tutelage of Dr. Chris Ford, he developed a keen interest in and fascination with jazz. Kelly would regularly visit his father, a jazz singer, in New York, who was singing with jazz greats Junior Cook, Curtis Fuller, Bill Hardman, Hilton Ruiz and Steve Turre. From this association, Kelly had the opportunity to study with Junior Cook and to learn from some of the finest jazz musicians in the world.
After graduating from the Baltimore School for the Arts, in 1987, Kelly moved to Philadelphia and started working with the OTIN jazz band. While in Philadelphia and attending the Settlement School of Music, Kelly had the opportunity to be in the presence of and learn from jazz great, Sun Ra. All the while, playing in various clubs in and around Philadelphia. From 1990-1991, he toured Europe with the OTIN jazz band. Kelly's saxophone playing has also taken him to Korea, Canada and throughout the United States.
In 1992, Kelly returned to Baltimore and began saxophone studies with mentor and jazz great, Gary Bartz. Kelly also taught music at Grovepark Arts Academy for two years while playing in various big bands and combos, such as the Eubie Blake Big Band where he held the first alto chair. Kelly has played at numerous major festivals such as the Mellon Jazz Festival in Pennsylvania, the Lille Jazz Festival in Lille, France, and Artscape opening up for acts such as Gladys Knight, The Temptations and Buckwheat Zydeco.
Kelly Shepherd's primary influences are Charlie Parker, Sidney Bechet, John Coltrane, Junior Cook, Pharaoh Sanders, Gary Bartz and ballad singers Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington and Johnny Hartman. Kelly has performed with Richard Wyands, Grady Tate, Carl Grubbs, Leroy Williams, Paul Brown, Dave Hubbard ,Yusef Salim and many more. Aside from playing as a sideman on various recordings with some of the artists mentioned above, THE BEAUTY OF SIMPLICITY is Kelly's solo debut recording and the start of many more to come.
JOEL HOLMES
Joel Holmes was born in Arizona on December 6, 1982. Three years later,the family moved to Virginia. It was Joels mother, Theresa who first noticed her sons early musical talent when Joel would sit at the piano and play tunes by ear. Encouraged by his initiative, his father Dennis, a trumpet player for the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corp in Fort Myer, started off his music education by teaching him all he knew about basic piano.
Joels talent was impressive enough for his mother to suggest he pursue an education in music. With Joel's promise to work hard, the family relocated to Baltimore so he could attend the Baltimore School for the Arts. It was at school during Black History Month where Joel heard the musical sound that would change his life, "I first heard ragtime at music class. It was like a window opening." With a growing passion, Joel soaked up a steady influence of jazz greats like Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum.
After high school, Joel attended the acclaimed Peabody Conservatory of Music at John Hopkins University. He gained popularity with his fellow students playing impressive performances at various festivals and venues.
Joel has studied with Bobby McFerrin, Roy Hargrove, Gary thomas, and a host of other respected musicians. He has also taught music and theory at the Rock Junior Academy, the Baltimore School for the Arts and has over 15 private students.
A recent Bachelor of Arts graduate from the Peabody Conservatory in Jazz Performance, Joel's accolades include a gold medal in the Act-so Competition of the NAACP, a silver medal in the Local and National Levels, an honorable mention in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, a finalist in the 5th annual Independent Music Awards, a recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council Grant, and an honorable mention in the Vh1 song of the year awards.
Now at 23, Joel composes his own style of music blending an array of traditional and contemporary jazz, gospel, R&B, soul, hip-hop, neo soul, funk, classical and pop. His states, "My music is a direct
expression of musical influences, spiritual freedom and personal interpretation." In addition, he plays a repertoire of over three hundred well-known tunes He has opened for The Temptations, The Manhattans, Tonex, Regina Bell and Phil Perry.
Joel has had the honor of performing at The Kennedy Center, Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, The Litchfield,Hartford and Columbia jazz festivals, aswell as the Morgan State Universitys tribute to Baltimore Legends. The group is currently getting radio airplay at Mosaic Online, a popular online jazz radio station, 88.9, Morgan State University jazz station.
Because of his increasing popularity, Joel Holmes is touring extensively throughout the East Coast. In September 2005, he performed in Taiwan and Singapore. Joel Holmes has just released his debut album, "Eternal Vision."
ERIC KENNEDY
Eric Kennedy gained his first musical experience singing and playing percussion with a family band, neighborhood and church choirs before the age of five. He received his first music lessons on hand drums, drum kit and piano from musician relatives. Eric continued his music studies in the Baltimore City Gifted and Talented Exploratory (G.A.T.E.) programs. While performing in choirs, orchestra and drum ensemble, Eric composed and arranged music for a sextet and short films that won awards in city and state school film festivals in 1980-1981.
In 1983, he attended the Baltimore School for the Arts where he studied classical percussion and voice under the tutelage of John Locke, Donna Distefano, and Dr. Nathan Carter. In 1985, he attended the Music Careers Program at Frederick Douglass Sr. High School. After graduation in 1987, Eric moved to Philadelphia and worked with the O.T.I.N. jazz band. Eric listened to and learned from jazz greats-- drummers Edgar Bateman and Mickey Roker while performing on the East Coast. In 1990, Eric toured Europe with O.T.I.N. for two years and made his debut recording. Eric made a tour of South America with French bassist Victor Sabas and his trio.
Upon returning to the States in 1993, Eric continued his music studies. He studied voice with Timmy Shepherd, drums with jazz great Leroy Williams, Jamal Wilson and attended the Barry Harris Jazz workshops in New York City.
Eric has performed and or recorded with Richard Wyands, Yusef Salim, Gary Bartz, Paul Brown, Keter Betts, Dave Hubbard, Gary Thomas, Greg Osby, Cyrus Chestnut, John Swana, John Pattitucci, Ingrid Jensen, and The Eubie Blake Big Band among others. His compositions can be found on recordings by Kelly Shepherd, Al Maniscalco, Steve Carrington and the soundtrack to the independent film, The Big Muddy.
Eric's primary influences are vocalists Timmy Shepherd, Andy Bey, Johnny Mathis, Jimmy Scott, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday; and drummers Leroy Williams, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Ed Blackwell, Connie Kay, Max Roach, Billy Higgins and Billy Hart among others.
