ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Classical pianist Irina Nuzova "rises above mere virtuosity" (Washington Post) in her thoughtful rendition of the classical repertoire. As soloist and chamber music partner she distinguishes herself for her "intensity of feeling" (La Nazione, Florence, Italy) and "profound interpretation" (Strad, London).
Irina Nuzova has performed in the United States, Europe, and South America. She has appeared at the prestigious Amici della Musica Concert Series in Florence; Teatro Massima in Catania, Italy; in Russia at the Hermitage State Museum in St. Petersburg and at the Moscow Conservatory; in the U.S. at the Phillips Collection Gallery in Washington DC, at the Bar Harbor Music Festival in Maine, the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York, the Rhode Island Chamber Music Concert Series, Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series at the Chicago Cultural Center, and at the University of Maine at Augusta.
Ms. Nuzova has won top prizes as piano soloist and as chamber ensemble pianist in international competitions such as the Vincenzo Bellini and Citta di Senigallia International Competitions in Italy, the coveted Bruce Hungerford Award at the Young Concert Artist Auditions in New York, and the Beethoven Piano Sonata International Competition in Memphis, Tennessee. As member of a piano-cello ensemble she won prizes at the Vittorio Gui and the Premio Trio di Trieste International Chamber Music Competitions in Italy. Her performances were broadcast live on WFMT in Chicago, WGBH in Boston, and Italian TV.
A native of Moscow, Ms. Nuzova made her debut with the Omsk Philharmonic at the age of 14. Before moving to the United States she studied at the Gnessin Academy of Music under the guidance of Alexander Satz. She completed her musical education at Manhattan School of Music with Lev Natochenny, and at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, where her teachers were Oxana Yablonskaya and Jerome Lowenthal. Ms. Nuzova is maintaining her studies with renowned French pianist Jean-Bernard Pommier. In addition, she worked for five years in the cello studio of Harvey Shapiro at Juilliard, which has contributed further to her formation as musician.
Sergey Ostrovsky first violinist and the founder of the "Aviv" String Quartet, is a winner of the 3rd Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition (1999, Grand Prix and 4 Special Prizes), Bordeaux String Quartet Competition (2003), Aviv National Music Competition (1999, Tel Aviv) and other top prizes: "Schubert and Modernity" Competition (2003, Graz, Austria, 2nd Prize and Schubert Prize) and Rodolfo Lipizer Violin Competition (Italy, 1995).
Sergey Ostrovsky performed as a quartet member and as a soloist at internationally renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall (New York), Kennedy Center and The Library of Congress (Washington), Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall (London), Tonhalle (Zurich), Auditorium du Louvre, Theatre du Chatelet, and Theatre de la Ville (Paris), De Doelen Rotterdam, Sydney Opera House, Capetown City Hall, Durban Concert Hall, Cologne Philharmonie, Beethoven House (Bonn, Germany) Wiener Konzerthouse, Tchaikovsky Hall of Moscow Conservatory, Valensia Concert Hall and other venues in Israel, Germany, Austria, England, France, Ireland, Holland, China, Canada, Portugal, South
Africa, Brazil etc.
As a soloist Sergey performed with orchestras such as Israel Philharmonic, Cape Philharmonic (Capetown), Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Durban Nathal Philharmonic, Moscow Philharmonic, Johanessburg Philharmonic, Israel Chamber Orchestra, Israel Kibbutz Orchestra, Young Israel Philharmonic, "Amadeus" Chamber Orchestra (Poland) Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) Philharmonic, Beer Sheva Sinfonet and "Tel Aviv Soloists" ensemble under the baton of Philippe Entremont, Zeev Dorman, Uriel Segal, Doron Solomon, Barak Tal, Vag Papyan, Alexander Vedernikov, Alexander Skulsky, Vladimir Ziva, Yaron Gotfried, En Shao, Li Xincao, Agnezska Duzmal, Ovidiu Balan and Omri Hadari.
Sergey Ostrovsky was born in 1975 in Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod) to a family of musicians. He began playing violin at the age of 6, and studied with David Lapidus as his first teacher. He made his first concert appearances at the age of 8, and performed for a first time with a symphony orchestra at the age of 13.
In the Music College of Gorky Conservatory he continued his studies with Lazar Gantman and Yury Gluchovsky, and in 1990 won his first prize in the Russian National Competition in Tver. In 1991 he immigrated to Israel with his family and continued his studies with Prof. Yair Kless and Irina Svetlova at the Rubin Academy of Music of Tel Aviv University (since 2005 renamed The Buchmann-Mehta School of Music). During 1993-98 Sergey served as a concertmeister of several Israeli orchestras, such as The Israeli Chamber Orchestra, The Israeli Kibbutz Orchestra, Young Israel Philharmonic, and during his Army Service- Principal violinist of Israel Army Chamber Orchestra.
In 1996 Sergey founded the Aviv Quartet which relocated to Europe to study with the members of Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne Hochschule (1998-2000), and with members of Daniel Quartet in Rotterdam Conservatory, where Sergey completed his Bachelor Degree Diploma with Natalia Morozova in 2000, and his Master Degree Diploma in Amsterdam Conservatory with Alexander Kerr in 2002.
Sergey participated in Master Classes with Isaac Stern, Hermann Krebbers, Reiner Kussmaul, Zachar Bron, Dorothy Delay, Ivry Gitlis, Ida Haendel, members of Amadeus Quartet, La Salle Quartet, Julliard Quartet, Emerson Quartet and Ysaye Quartet.
During the years 1992-2001 Sergey won scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. He plays on a 1716 Grancinno violin, which was purchased with the support of Mr. James Mayer and "Zfunot Tarbut" a non profit organization for arts and artists in Israel.
In February 2006 Sergey Recorded together with the violinist Maxim Vengerov, and The Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, Mozart Concertone for two violins for EMI Classics.
