Williams is a talented drummer who was a mainstay of the legendary Shirley Horn Trio. He will be accompanied by an all-star cast of musicians who are known throughout the world: This group will set the tone for Steve's CD release on the Elabeth label, entitled New Incentive.
Williams is one of the giants of the trap drum kit on the scene today. He proved that by holding down the drum chair in the legendary Shirley Horn Trio for many years. Having taste, technique, endurance and spirituality, Steve has that rare quality of being musical. Being so knowledgeable of his instrument, he just conducts himself like a talented surgeon completing a delicate procedure.
Steve comes to An Die Musik with his recent recording, entitled , New Incentive . To highlight the quality and depth of this latest project, he is accompanied by some of the greatest interpreters and creators of this art form.
Larry Willis is on piano. He is perhaps one of the greatest musicians on this instrument today. He is a composer, arranger and an artist who understands what high art is about.
Besides leading his own recordings and bands Larry has composed, arranged and toured with the following: Cannonball & Nat Adderley, Blood Sweat & Tears, Chico Freeman, Roy Hargrove, Shirley Horn, Stan Getz, The Fort Apache Band, Hugh Masekela and not to mention the symphony orchestras he has worked with and composed for. Yes, he writes and performs classical music as well. I failed to mention he has worked with Gary Bartz, Gary Thomas, Michael Formanek etc. Larry has a beautiful touch on the piano as well as a great concept of human expression. Listen to some of is original recordings and you will understand. Remember, Larry was a singer with the Music & Chorale Arts Ensemble performing an opera by Aaron Copland under the direction of Leonard Bernstein.
Steve Slagle is a great alto saxophonist who is just as adapt on the entire reed family. He is co founder of the Stryker/Slagle organization. Steve is the music director of the Mingus Big Band. This Berklee graduate who hails from California has worked and recorded with Joe Lovano , Billy Hart, John Hicks and to many to name.
Michael Bowie is one of the most gift and premier bassist/composer of our time. He has won the National Endowment For The Arts Award In Jazz. He has music degrees from the University of Michigan and Ohio State University, from the institute of classical & jazz studies. Michael has worked and recorded with Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, Sarah Vaughan, Natalie Cole, Behki Mseleku, Michel Camilo, Manhattan Transfer plus many others. When it comes to discussing Michaels contribution to the music, his peers always mention that they feel as sense of trust and security while playing with him. He is viewed as a great soloist and the cohesive element of the band.
Donvonte McCoy is the young and up coming trumpeter who has been assigned that responsibility of bringing a fresh new look at tradition to this quintet.
Jamie Broumas is the special guest for Steves performance. She is the very talented vocalist who has made numerous appearances on the east coast. Jamie has given some memorable performances at the Kennedy Center and she is a former member of the group called Rare Silk.
There is too much talent to miss this special, one-time performance.
