Wilbert de Joode is a veritable research scientist of bass pizzicato and bowing techniques. A self-taught musician, he has been playing the double bass since 1982 and is currently one of the most active bass players on the improvised music circuit. His individual style and musicality transforms the double bass into an equal partner in the most varied ensembles. A personal tone color, exploration of the outer registers, idiosyncratic improvisations and the use of gut strings contribute to an instantly recognizable and intriguing sound.
de Joode is active in the Ab Baars Trio, Eric Boeren 4tet, trio Braam/de Joode/Vatcher, trio Fuhler/Bennink/DeJoode, the Chris Abelen Quintet, Bik Bent Braam, the Astronotes, Corkestra, apa ini and the extravagant INTERMISSION. New developments include solo concerts, a duo with Tobias Delius and work with dance improvisers such as David Zambrano en Masako Noguchi.
He has worked with, among others, Hamid Drake, Steve Lacy, Rosswell Rudd, The Ex, het NU-ensemble, Jaap Blonk, Charles Gayle, Misha Mengelberg, Sunny Marray, John Tchicai, Fred Frith, MariĆtte Rouppe van de Voort, Denis Charles, Steve Arguelles, Dylan van der Schyff, Thomas Lehn, Achim Kauffman, Johannes Bauer, Frank Gratkowski, Martin Blume, Paul Termos, Willem van Manen, Barre Phillips and Derek Bailey.
De Joode plays regularly in festivals and concerts throughout the world. He has released a solo CD, Olo (Wig 06, 2002) a suite of improvised, short, wayward, witty, gloomy, beautiful and freakish bass solos, and plans to release another in the autumn of 2007.
PRESS REVIEW
Wilbert De Joode is one of the busiest bass players in Amsterdam, playing with both New Dutch Swing units like Eric Boeren's 4tet and chamber ensembles like Ig Henneman's String Quartet. He has the provocative instincts to push whatever music he is playing to the point of turbulence, yet his command of the instrument prevents the music from collapsing into a heap of slag. On Olo, an album of short solo improvisations, concept and technique are often indistinguishable. Employing an extraordinarily fast and sure attack, he exploits the range and timbre of his 19th century, gut stringed chamber bass to create an exceptionally broad sonic palette. Add Olo to the small but growing list of essential solo bass recordings.
