Featuring BSO Principal Oboe Katherine Needleman in a return engagement, the winners of the 2006 Astral Artistic Services National Auditions bring together five woodwind artists with rich backgrounds. ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Members of the ensemble are winners of numerous awards and distinctions, including the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the Yamaha Young Artist Competition, and the International Double Reed Societys Gillet-Fox Competition. They hold positions in the Baltimore Symphony, the Richmond Symphony, and the Carolina Chamber Symphony. In its short history, Astral Winds has performed to standing ovations, most notably at a recent sold-out performance at An die Musik in Baltimore.
The Astral Winds are dedicated to educating a new and young generation of music lovers. The quintet has collaborated with the 92nd Street Y, Midori and Friends, and Astral Artistic Services in a wide variety of outreach activities. In addition to wind duos, trios, and quartets, Astral Winds performs most of the standard wind quintet repertoire. The international ensemble (members hail from the U.S., Korea, Spain, and Russia) also collaborates with pianists and other instrumentalists, in order to perform less traditional works.
Members of the Astral Winds have performed at the Marlboro, Tanglewood, Pacific, Newport, Bowdoin, Verbier, and Colorado music festivals. They have concertized on five continents, and in most of the fifty United States. The Astral Winds were educated at the finest music conservatories, including the Curtis Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, the Yale School of Music, and the Oberlin Conservatory.
