Formed in the fall of 2002, Duo Transatlantique is comprised of Benjamin Beirs, a student of Julian Gray, and fellow Peabody guitarist Maud Laforest, a student of Manuel Barrueco. Under the coaching of Julian Gray, they have achieved much success in the United States and Europe. In the summer of 2005 in Paris, the duo won first prize in the Union Francaise des Artistes Musiciens Guitar Duo Competition and performed a recital in the American Cathedral in Paris. In addition to their frequent overseas performances, the duo has twice been asked to perform at Peabody's Thursday Noon Recital Series, and was selected to represent Peabody at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in a series entitled "The Conservatory Project." The duo was handpicked to represent Peabody at the Johns Hopkins Knowledge for the World gala. In July 2007, the duo could be heard throughout France, in music festivals as well as church recitals.
