A rarity in North America, the Baltimore Mandolin Quartet is a "quartetto romantico" in the Italian tradition, combining roundback mandolins and the deeper-voiced mandola with the classical guitar. The four instruments' thirty vibrating strings produce sounds of surprising richness and brilliance, as well as great delicacy.

Their repertoire includes music written specifically for mandolin quartet, as well as transcriptions of famliar classics.

Since 2001, the Baltimore Mandolin Quartet has appeared in many concert venues in the Baltimore/DC area, and has performed at the last two annual conventions of the Classical Mandolin Society of America. The performers are Dave Evans (first mandolin), Laura Norris (second mandolin), Tony Norris (guitar), Jonathan Jensen (mandola).

Last year, the quartet relesed their debut CD, "Grandmother's Ghost."

Beatrice Gilbert, Lyric Soprano

Born in Naples, Italy, Mrs. Gilbert moved to the United States as a child and grew up in the Annapolis, Maryland area. After high school, she began her studies at The Peabody Conservatory. She also took private voice lessons from internationally-performing baritone Daniel Comegys.

More recently, since moving to Pennsylvania, Bea is continuing her studies on a music degree from York College of Pennsylvania, where she studies privately with well-known soprano Linda Anderson-Baer.

She has performed with the Capitol Opera Company in Harrisburg, PA in Gian Carlo Menotti's, The Medium, and at York College in Igor Stravinsky's, Mavra, in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel and in Giacomo Puccini's Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. She is also resident soprano with the Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra, and is the featured soloist on the BMO's recent CD, City By the Sea.

In addition to classical and operatic music, Bea enjoys sacred music, popular music and jazz. Bea is a popular guest soloist at local churches and has performed professionally with many organizations and in many venues, including traditional Italian-American festivals in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
