You are invited to share in an exciting and unique event as we celebrate the recent release of Viola Seul: Works for unaccompanied viola, a new CD from Centaur Records featuring our very own Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Acting Assistant Principal Violist, Peter Minkler. This distinctive collection of rarely heard pieces includes music by Bach, Vieuxtemps, Reger, Hindemith, Stravinsky and Fuchs, as well as the world premiere recording of Three for One by Marcel Dick.
After performing several solo selections included on the CD, Peter will be joined by pianist Lura Johnson in the beautiful and lyric Sonata for Viola and Piano by George Rochberg.
Of his CD, Mr. Minkler writes, "This recording of unaccompanied viola works, unusual though it may be, unites those pieces for which I have a deep personal affinity while showcasing the extraordinary qualities of my oft-maligned instrument. Although rarely considered a solo instrument, the viola, with its distinctive timbre, rich sonorous tone and closeness in range to the human voice, is capable of expression far exceeding its reputation. After listening to Viola Seul, I hope you will agree."
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Peter Minkler
Praised by the Baltimore Sun for producing a darkly beautiful sound as he limned the score with clarity and communicative warmth, Peter Minkler is currently Acting Assistant Principal Viola of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He also serves as Principal Viola of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society Orchestra, a position he has held since 1998. Prior to his arrival in Baltimore, he was Associate Principal with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
Mr. Minkler began his undergraduate instruction with Robert Vernon at the Cleveland Institute of Music and earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Francis Tursi. He also participated in master classes at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada with Lillian Fuchs, Donald McInnes and William Primrose.
He has appeared as soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Columbia (MD) Orchestra, the Baltimore Choral Arts Society and the Buffalo Philharmonic. An avid chamber musician, Mr. Minkler regularly performs in recital and is co-founder of the Chamber Music by Candlelight series at the Second Presbyterian Church of Baltimore. Additionally, he coordinates the Chamber Music UB: The BSO Musicians Series, recently developed in conjunction with the University of Baltimore and now in its second season.
His first solo CD, Viola Seul: Works for unaccompanied viola, was recently released world wide by Centaur Records. It is a unique collection of seven works for unaccompanied viola and includes a world premiere recording.
Lura Johnson
Hailed as "brilliant" by the Washington Post, LURA JOHNSON enjoys a varied career as chamber musician, solo artist, and teacher. She has concertized throughout the US, England and France as a soloist and chamber musician. Praised for her invention, originality, and marvelous sense of flow, she has been presented as a solo artist at Carnegie Halls Weill Recital Hall and Washington D.C.s Phillips Collection and in various collaborations at the Kennedy Center, the Corcoran Gallery, the National Gallery, and Strathmore Music Center and Mansion. Johnson is one of four pianists recently selected to participate in a Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshop led by legendary pianist Leon Fleisher. She will perform in public masterclasses with Mr. Fleisher in October and a concert in Weill Recital Hall in January, 2008.
One of Baltimores most active chamber musicians, Ms. Johnson collaborates regularly with members of the Baltimore Symphony. This season she presents the complete Brahms Violin Sonatas with Baltimore Symphony concertmaster Jonathan Carney. In 2002 Ms. Johnson and award winning flutist Christina Jennings formed the Jennings-Johnson Duo, which tours regularly throughout the US and released its first recording to critical acclaim in January of 2006. Inspired to explore all the combinations of the duo repertoire, they challenge the traditional hierarchy of soloist and accompanist with performances that include solo works, transcriptions, and music of today. Each a virtuoso in her own right, their synergy attracts new audiences to the flute and piano medium.
Strongly committed to new music, she performs regularly with the Towson New Music Ensemble and Verge Ensemble, the ground-breaking new music ensemble in residence at Washingtons Corcoran Gallery of Art. She won top honors for best performance of a contemporary work at both the Garrison Competition and the International Russian Music Competition.
Ms. Johnson holds degrees from Rice Universitys Shepherd School of Music, and went on to study with luminaries Leon Fleisher and Robert McDonald at the Peabody Institute. A native of Oberlin, Ohio and daughter of musical parents, she served on the faculty of the Sequoia Chamber Music Workshop and currently teaches at the Peabody Institute and Loyola College. In her spare time, Lura enjoys both social and competitive ballroom dance.
