ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alain PLANÈS, piano
Passionately fond of painting and a great connoisseur of it, a true poetry-lover, Alain
Planès has a career just like him : he has always followed the course of live rather than
the appeals of demanding and compromising glory.
There is some kind of peculiar blend of both, Proust and Wilde, on him. The first one with
regard to time, profound, drifted apart, Schubert like. The other one with regard to
certain intellectual dandyism, a sort of subtle cynicism that remains tender all the same.
He inherited the fervent humbleness and generosity of spirit from his mother, a painter
and music lover herself, who has the soul of an artist. This is what really makes style &
rigour is little without any grace.
Planès discovers the piano at the age of five, plays with an orchestra three years later
and leaves for the United States once he completed his studies at the Paris
Conservatoire, in order to play music differently : with Pressler, Sebök, Primrose and
Starker, with whom he gave numerous concerts in the USA and in Europe.
Soloist, chamber music interpreter, accompanist, teacher, he is concerned by many
different forms of art. He discovered, among others, the whole classical and
contemporary repertoire while playing for two pianos with François Michel, a friend of
Stravinsky, and he got acquainted at his home with the great minds of that century like
Malraux, Deleuze, Cassandre, and later on, Miro.
Back to France a few years later, he becomes, at Pierre Boulez's request, the pianist
soloist of the Ensemble Intercontemporain. Their collaboration was pursued until 1981.
His thorough work with such eminent composers as Boulez, Stockhausen, Ligeti or Berio
has definitely affirmed the eclectic character of his manner of playing and he has
become very much in demand of the leading festivals. He performs notably at La
Roque d'Anthéron, in Montreux, at the Festival d'Art Lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence, and in
Marlboro, the prestigious festival where he is a regular participant, as he was very close
to Rüdolf Serkin.
He has also made numerous recordings for Harmonia Mundi. One can list notably
Scarlatti sonatas, Chopin and Debussy preludes, Liszt transcriptions of Beethoven
symphonies, and Haydn sonatas - brilliant, awarded by Diapason d'Or and Choc of the
Monde de la Musique.
The complete Schubert sonatas, played recently at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, has
been hailed by international critics and has been a great success with the public.
