Too often in American music, highly creative artists who have made a major impact in their field are not given their due. For many years African American artists were unfairly denied access to the wider American audience because their recordings were designated as “race music.” This designation limited their sales to the African American community, while white musicians enjoyed greater exposure. While others like the legendary New Orleans trumpet master, Buddy Bolden were missed by the public, because they were never recorded and we’re left with the stories of their prowess, as told by his disciples, Joe “King” Oliver and Louis Armstrong.
Bop pianist, Bud Powell, drummer Max Roach, multi-reed player Rahsaan Roland Kirk, trumpeter Clifford Brown and singer Dinah Washington, were all remarkable musicians with one thing in common – they were better known by their peers than the public at-large. The list is large and includes better - known artists such as Charles Mingus and Thelonius Monk. They were all well regarded artists, yet largely ignored by mainstream writers and historians, given their relative importance as major contributors to American music.
Thanks to the magic of film, we’ll get a chance to see some of these great musicians, giving our audience a chance to see how creative these artists were. They are seen in rare footage, accompanied by some of the greatest names in the music.
