For many years most jazz critics assumed that the blues were part of jazz – but today we can see that the blues have a separate tradition, and yet they intermingle. Jazz grew out of the blues – and the blues grew out of the African American folk tradition.
Really the Blues is a program that traces some of the early blues and show how it evolved as African Americans migrated from the south to the cities in search of industrial jobs and new opportunities. We’ll see some of the women who made the first blues hits through their recordings, including the incomparable Bessie Smith in her only filmed performance, accompanied by James P. Johnson and members of Fletcher Henderson’s big band.
A diverse group of artists are seen throughout the program, from the country blues, to the delta and Chicago traditions. Jimi Hendrix is shown playing some of his signature pieces including Red House. Boogie Woogie piano duets with Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson are also featured. Some of the great names in music from Muddy Waters and BB King (in a rare interview), T Bone Walker, Buddy Guy and Jr. Wells are seen at their best. This is also an opportunity to see some of the musicians that influenced such musicians as the Rollling Stones, Eric Clapton, the Beatles and other rockers.
