Irene Kim

A native of Southern California, Irene Kim began her musical studies with her mother at age three and made her orchestral debut at age eight with the Young Musicians Foundation Orchestra. She has since continued her appearances across the United States, Canada, and Spain, including performances as soloist with the Los Angeles Korean Chamber Orchestra, Rio Hondo Symphony, Southwestern Youth Music Festival Orchestra, and repeat performances with the Young Musicians Foundation Orchestra.

Having garnered the Grand Prizes in the Korean Musicians Association of Southern California, Los Angeles Korea Times, and Elvin McGaughey Music Foundation competitions, the Franz Liszt First Prize in the William Garrison Young Artist competition, and top prizes in the Yale Gordon Concerto, and Russell C. Wonderlic competitions, amongst others, she gave subsequent performances at venues such as the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, the Ambassador and Luckman Auditoriums, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and the Library of Congress. Irene has also given regular recitals as a member of the Young Artists Guild and has been a participant of the Banff Centre for the Arts Festival, Gijón International Piano Festival, Piano Festival Northwest, and Seminars at the Colburn School.

Her significant teachers include Ick Choo Moon and Hae Young Moon. She received her B.M. and M.M. from the Peabody Conservatory under the tutelage of Marian Hahn and Boris Slutsky, with whom she is continuing her studies. In the course of her musical erudition, she has also had the privilege to work with various distinguished musicians, including Leon Fleisher, Anton Kuerti, Robert McDonald, Russell Sherman, and Robert Van Sice.

As a believer that the arts are a manifestation of humanity and its creativity, it has become one of Irene’s aspirations to let music travel to where its resounding compassion is much needed.
