ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Kristin Ostling joined the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra cello section in 1995. Having began her cello studies at the age of nine in Louisville, Kentucky, she appeared as a soloist with the Louisville Orchestra and the Louisville Youth Orchestra. Ms. Ostling earned her Bachelors degree from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music and a Masters degree from the Mannes College of Music. She has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Concerto soloists of Philadelphia in addition to appearances as a soloist and chamber musician at numerous festivals including: the La Tolla Chamber Music Society’s “Summerfest,” “Bargemusic,” the Pensacola Chamber Music Festival, and the Academia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy.

A frequent performer on the BSO’s “Chamber Music by Candlelight” series, Ms. Ostling has been featured on the BSO’s “Summer MusicFest,” in collaboration with guest artists Pinchas Zukerman, Ralph Kirschbaum and Ariel Shamai. She has also appeared as a soloist with the BSO. In a different venue, she can be heard on the rock album, “Southern Barber Supply” by the Richmond-based Cashmere Jungle Lords. In her spare time, Ms. Ostling enjoys hiking and tracking the pursuits of elite mountaineers from the comfort of sea level.

Myriam Avalos Teie's performances throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia have earned her critical acclaim as a soloist and chamber musician. At the age of three, she gave her first public performance, made her orchestra debut with the National Symphony Orchestra of Peru at twelve, and was awarded full scholarships to the Eastman School of Music and the Peabody Conservatory Ms. Avalos Teie holds a Doctoral degree in Chamber Music from the Catholic University of America. She performs with the National Symphony Orchestra as an adjunct pianist, and is a faculty member and performing artist at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music Summer Festival. Other appearances and broadcasts include the Phillips Collection, Kennedy Center, Dumbarton Concert Series, Purcell Room in London, Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, Voice of the OAS, San Antonio Festival, WGMS Radio, Teatro Municipal de Lima and two State Department-sponsored tours of China and Brazil.

Dr. Avalos Teie has recorded for the MSR Classics label in collaboration with National Symphony‘s principal trumpet, Steve Hendrickson and organist William Neil.

In 2004, Dr. Avalos Teie was conferred the title of Cultural Ambassador by the Government of Peru.

Grammy nominee Larry Hoffman is an award-winning composer whose works have been performed throughout the United States and in Europe. While at the Peabody Conservatory he received grants from the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard and the American Music Center. He was the recipient of Peabody¹s Gustav Klemm Award and Otto Ortmann Prize for compositional excellence. During that time, his Music For Six Percussionists was a prizewinner in the National Percussive Arts Society Competition, and was subsequently published by Seesaw Music Publications in New York. He has enjoyed premieres and performances of his works in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, Chicago,Washington, DC, and Sweden. In 2007, he was commissioned by the Chicago Sinfonietta Orchestra to compose Three Songs For Bluesman And Orchestra,performed both at Dominican University and Symphony Center in Chicago in May, 2008. That year, Hoffman was nominated for a United States Artists Fellowship Award.

Hoffman is also an internationally regarded expert in the field of blues music. He has received multiple Living Blues Magazine critics awards as well as a WC Handy Award and multiple Handy nominations for his writings on blues music; his production of contemporary blues recordings; and his compilation, production, and annotation to historical blues compilations such as the Smithsonian Institution¹s Mean Old World: The Blues From 1940 To 1994, and Sony-Universal¹s Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues. The Smithsonian collection earned him a Grammy nomination for best liner notes. The Scorsese collection won two Grammy¹s: for best liner notes, and best historical compilation.
