Steve Coleman Vocalist Jen Shyu performs ritual invocation about
Chinese laborers in 19th Century Colonial Cuba & other stories at An die Musik Live!
Baltimore CD Release of “JADE TONGUE”
$15 per set ($25 both sets)
Known mostly for her virtuosic singing with saxophonist/composer Steve Coleman & Five Elements, Jen Shyu’s quartet will perform for one night only with a new CD under its belt, Jade Tongue. Her powerful and sensuous music and dance paints the throbbing landscape of Chinese labor narratives from 19th century colonial Cuba and other stories in the form of ritual invocation, including texts by Esteban Montejo (from Autobiography of a Runaway Slave), Li Bai, Meng Jiao, Yang Wu Bin Mei, Brazilian poet Patrícia Magalhães, and Shyu herself. She sings and improvises seamlessly in many tongues (including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Taiwanese, Mandarin), telling these stories through intricate, long-form composition and improvisation.
Joining her in bringing these stories to life at An die Musik are NY-based heavies Tyshawn Sorey on drums, Thomas Morgan on bass, and Miles Okazaki on guitar. Shyu, fresh from a MacDowell Colony residency, will perform new compositions on vocals, piano, and er hu, as well as music from her new self-produced and self-released Jade Tongue album.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Born in Illinois from Taiwanese and East Timorese parents, Jen Shyu is a vocalist, composer, improviser, multi-instrumentalist, and dancer. As a soloist and bandleader now based in New York City, Shyu has established herself as a pioneering voice in the jazz, avant-garde, and creative music worlds. She also continues a dying Taiwanese folk tradition on the 2-stringed Taiwanese moon guitar, singing songs which she learned from elders in southern Taiwan and new songs she writes for the instrument as well.
Her work is influenced by collaborations with Asian Improv aRts artists during her 3 years in the Bay Area after graduating from Stanford University, her work with the late great poet Sekou Sundiata, duo projects with pianist Dave Burrell, bassist Mark Dresser, guitarist Miles Okazaki, dancer Satoshi Haga, actress Soomi Kim; playing with a wide range of artists on the burgeoning improvisational scene in NYC from Mat Maneri to Jason Moran and her band members David Binney, Shane Endsley, and David Bryant. Having performed with the D.C.-based alternative hip-hop group Opus Akoben with Steve Coleman, Shyu is also deeply influenced by folk and aboriginal music of Taiwan, research in Cuba and Brazil, and a lifetime of classical training in piano, violin, ballet, and opera.
Aside from MacDowell, she has been awarded fellowships from the Asian Cultural Council, Jerome Foundation/Roulette Space, and the Bronx Council on the Arts. More: www.jenshyu.com, www.myspace.com/jenshyu.com
