DAHLIA FLUTE DUO
All tickets $10
Mary Matthews and Melissa Wertheimer formed The Dahlia Flute Duo at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. Recipients of a 2009-2010 Yamaha In-Residence Fellowship from the College Music Society, the duo strives to share theirlove of classical and contemporary flute music with the greater Baltimore/DC communities. The Dahlia Flute Duo presented a lecture-recital funded by this grant at
the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair in Reston, VA. The duo was also selected as recipients
of a 2009 Peabody Career Development Grant. The Dahlia Flute Duo regularly
performs at the Walters Art Museum, providing music for First Fridays and
introductory music for the Adult Lecture Series. The duo has been featured twice on
the Candlelight Concert Society's Community Outreach Series, as well as at the
Baltimore Book Festival, the Sowebo Music and Arts Festival, and press events held by
the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts.
Pianist/conductor Joshua Horsch earned his M.M. in Orchestral Conducting from Penn
State University, and graduated from Ithaca College with a B.M. in Piano Performance.
Joshua is a frequent collaborator with the Dahlia Flute Duo throughout Baltimore, DC,
and Delaware. At both IC and Penn State, Joshua served as a staff pianist, and
collaborated extensively with a variety of vocalists and instrumentalists. Additionally,
Joshua was a concerto soloist with the IC Wind Ensemble, a semi-finalist in the MTNA
National Piano Competition, and a semi-finalist in the Oberlin International Youth
Piano Competition. At PSU, Joshua served as Music Director/Conductor of the
Sinfonietta, Assistant Conductor to the Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras, and
cover conductor for the Central PA Youth Orchestra. In Ithaca, Joshua was Assistant
Conductor of the Ithaca Community Orchestra, Co-Music Director of the IC String
Orchestra, and the co-founder and former music director of the Ithaca Opera Project.
Other conducting work includes four concerts with the Lyatoshinksy Chamber
Orchestra in Kiev, and performances with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus and
Orchestra as a participant in Helmuth Rilling’s Masterclass in Choral-Orchestral
conducting.
