Ernest Khabeer Dawkins is one of Chicago’s premier saxophonists and a longtime member of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. Dawkins’ New Horizons, formed in 1978, possesses a sound that showcases this group’s unique combinations of the bebop, swing, and avant garde aspects of jazz. Dawkins holds a Masters in Music Education and has served as Chairman of the famed and still active Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Dawkins’ latest recording is “Un-Till Emmett Till”, recorded by his Chicago 12 ensemble and dedicated to murdered 14-year-old Emmett Louis ‘Bobo’ Till. Previous Dawkins’ dedications from this series have been made to slain Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton, and to the 1968 Chicago 7 Trial. All three recordings are self-released on Dawkins’ own Dawk Music record label.
