Ethnic Heritage Ensemble joins us for the seventh consecutive year to celebrate Black History Month!

EHE founder drummer/percussionist Kahil El’ Zabar is a native of Chicagoan, and former President of its famed Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). EHE led its first performance in Chicago, in 1973, upon Zabar’s return from the University of Ghana. Nearly 40 years later, this legendary band is still serving the people worldwide with their special brand of 21st century Griot music. Former AACM President and multi-reed instrumentalist Ernest Khabeer Dawkins continues to teach to music and culture to youth during the AACM’s still-ongoing free Saturday youth training programs. In addition to being the founder and leader of the two-decade plus New Horizon’s Ensemble, Dawkin’s continues to release movements of his well-received Chicago 12 series, self released on Dawk Music. The current 3rd movement in the series reflects on the life and impact of slain civil rights icon Emmitt Till.

Trumpeter Corey Wilkes is one of the freshest and original young musicians on the jazz scene today. In addition to assuming the trumpet chair of the famed Art Ensemble of Chicago following the passing of Lester Bowie, Wilkes has released on number of recordings under his own name, including 2009’s “Cries from Tha Ghetto”, with his ensemble Abstrakt Pulse.

The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble remains a healing force for today’s world.
