ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Joon Yoon, 18, began studying the piano at the age of six, and made his solo debut at the age of 12 at Kumo Hart Hall in Seoul, Korea. He has studied at the Seoul Arts Center Music Academy, the Preparatory Division of the Korean National University of Arts, and Yewon Arts School. In 2006, Joon entered the studio of Yong Hi Moon at the Peabody Preparatory of the Johns Hopkins University.
Joon was one of six winners of the 2011 PianoTexas Concerto Competition, where he performed Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto with the Fort Worth Symphony and was hailed by critics as “musically wise beyond his years.” Joon has won First Place and Best Interpretation of an American Composer in the 2009 Liszt-Garrison International Piano Competition (YA-II Category) held in Baltimore, and First Place in the 2009 Fite Family Young Artist Piano Competition in Missouri. He was also one of six semi-finalists of the RNCM International Piano Competition held in Manchester, England (2008). He won Second Prize in the Junior Division of the 2nd Louisiana International Piano Competition (2007), and was the recipient of the 23rd Annual Awards from Peabody Preparatory in 2007 after placing first at the Peabody Preparatory Concerto Competition. Before coming to America, Joon won numerous competitions and awards including the Silver Medal in the 7th International Chopin Piano Competition, Junior Division, in Tokyo (2006).
Joon’s notable performances include: the 23rd Young Musician’s Festival at Youngsan Art Hall (2006), the Seoul Arts Center Music Academy Prodigy Concert at the Seoul Arts Center Recital Hall (2005), and various solo and chamber concerts hosted by the Peabody Preparatory since coming to the U.S. In May of 2007, he performed with the Peabody Sinfonietta, conducted by Gene Young, and has also performed solo recitals in Washington D.C., Missouri, and Maryland.
In addition, he has attended several music festivals, including the Aria International Summer Music Academy (2007), Bowdoin International Music Festival (2007, 2008, 2011), Aspen Music Festival (2009), and the John O’Conor Music Camp & Master Class (2006).
Aside from his love of music Joon is a normal teenager who graduated early as a junior from Long Reach High School in Howard County, Maryland, where he was a member of the MESA, National German Honors Society, and National Honors Society. He is a rising sophomore at the Juilliard School with the Joseph Louis Spencer & Zylpha Allen Spencer, and Adele Marcus Piano Scholarship under the tutelage of Robert McDonald.
